Tasmania
In July 2003, the Tasmanian Minister for Health and Human Services asked the Ombudsman to conduct an independent review of claims made by adults regarding abuse suffered as children in the 'care' of the State. Shortly after this Review commenced, the Tasmanian Premier announced that ex gratia payments of up to $6,000 would be made available to assist claimants with their healing. In total 878 claims were received, and 670 were accepted as eligible.
