New South Wales
With the passage of the Orphan Schools Act 1826 in New South Wales, management of the colony's orphanages was the function of the new Clergy and School Lands Corporation. Since the earliest days of white settlement, the number of destitute and orphaned children in the colony was a cause of concern. In 1801 Governor King established Sydney's first Female Orphan School in George Street, Sydney.
