Western Australia
The Industrial Schools Act 1874 ('an Act to promote the efficiency of certain charitable institutions') was enacted to specify the powers of the managers of the various institutions for children that existed in Western Australia. Under the legislation, the Governor could approve a 'school, orphanage, or other institution formed for the purpose of providing for and educating necessitous children, or children or descendants of the aboriginal race'.
