At the time of writing, 'intellectual disability' is the term that describes the disability historically referred to as 'mental retardation'.
An intellectually disabled person may need support with: adaptive skills such as following and understanding directions; understanding abstract concepts; learning new information and understanding complex instructions; expressing and understanding language and understanding written language; and daily living tasks.
