The Adoption of Children Amendment Act 1949 made the registration of an adopted child (and therefore a new birth certificate) automatic. Previously, parents who adopted a child had had to apply to the Registrar General for a new birth entry to be made. Also, children over the age of 12 years no longer had to consent to their adoption if the Judge deemed there were 'special circumstances' (such as the child not knowing he or she was not born to the parents who were seeking adoption).
