The Department of Local Government and Communities was established on 1 July 2013. It was previously known as the Department of Communities. The Department ran the Country High School Hostels Ex-Gratia Scheme until December 2013. On 1 June 2017, the Department of Local Government and Communities' functions were dividied between two new departments - Department of Communities and Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
