The Incest Survivors Association Inc (ISA) was formally established in 1984 but it grew from a project in 1978 which sought information from the public about the extent of sexual assaults against women. In a 24-hour 'phone-in' more than half the callers spoke about being sexually assaulted by someone within their family. Children are often removed from families where incest has occurred, so it is likely that survivors include people who were in out of home care as children. In 1986, the ISA sat on the Child Sexual Abuse Task Force. Since that time ISA has continued to offer services and support to survivors, professional staff working in the area, and the community generally. In 2016 Incest Survivors Association Inc. was renamed Phoenix Support and Advocacy Service Inc.
