Illegitimate child was a term used to describe children if they were born to parents who were not married. An illegitimate child was mentioned in the Adoption of Children Act 1896 (s.2) in the definition of a deserted child who was not being maintained by the mother. The Adoption of Children Act Amendment Act 1964 (s.4A) required the mother's or guardian's sole consent for the adoption of an illegitimate child. The term was removed by the Adoption of Children Act Amendment Act 1976.
