The Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 provided procedures for checking the criminal record of people who carry out, or propose to carry out, child-related work. People who have been charged with or convicted of certain offences are inelligible to carry out child-related work.
The Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 was assented to on 8 December 2004 and different parts of the Act came into effect over a period of years. The Act became operational from 1 January 2006, except for sections 50-52, which came into effect from 1 January 2007. The purpose of the Act is to provide procedures for checking the criminal record of people who carry out, or propose to carry out, child-related work. People who have been charged with or convicted of certain offences are not eligible to carry out child-related work.
