The year 1979 was proclaimed the International Year of the Child by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The General Assembly of the United Nations decreed that in 1979, the well-being of children would be promoted around the world. The Year of the Child played a role in stimulating review and reform in Australian child welfare policy.
