Children and Youth Services, established in about 1998, is run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Its activities include the intake, assessment, case management, and overseeing of out of home care for children at risk of neglect or abuse. It also runs the Adoption Information Service.
The child protection service run by the Children and Youth Services operates according to the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1997. Under the Act, the Service is obliged to intervene if a child is at risk of abuse or neglect.
