The Department of Communities Tasmania was established in July 2018, taking over the administration of Children and Youth Services from the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services. Through Children and Youth Serices, the Department of Communities facilitated Out of Home Care, child welfare, and custodial youth justice services in Tasmania. It also ran the Adoptions and Permanency Services through Children and Youth Services, which is responsible for both the Tasmanian After Care Support Program and Adoption Information Service. The Department of Communities was abolished on 1 December 2022, with functions for Children, Youth and Families and Youth Justice Services transferred to the Department for Education, Children and Young People.
