Glenside Hospital was the new name given to the Parkside Mental Hospital from 1967. Run by the government, the Hospital housed people suffering from mental illness and with intellectual disabilities including some children. Initially no specific facilities were set aside for children in the Hospital and they were housed in wards with adult patients.
In 1971 the opening of the new Strathmont Centre for people with intellectual disabilities saw the transfer of a number of young people from the Hospital. Lochiel Park Boys' Training Centre also expanded its facilities in the 1970s taking in boys from other institutions including Glenside Hospital. The Children in State Care Report, however, shows that young people continued to be committed to Glenside Hospital into the 1980s and beyond.
From 2004, Glenside Hospital was designated the Glenside Campus Mental Health Service of the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service.
