Emergency care means short term immediate care for children in need. Emergency care was provided in specific government homes and some non-government homes. Emergency foster care was also sometimes available. During the first half of the twentieth century emergency care was provided at the Central Depot. In 1965 Windana Remand Home took over the function of emergency care. From the 1970s onwards, family homes and assessment units took over this role.
