Details

The Ningana Community Unit opened at James Street, Campbelltown in 1979. Run by the Department for Community Welfare, it operated on the site of the former Brookway Park secure institution which closed in 1978.

During the 1970s and into the 1980s, the department used smaller residential care units for State children rather than large institutions. Each metropolitan region had a number of units which were used for different purposes. Admission Units provided short term crisis care; Assessment Units were used for teenage young offenders and other units provided therapeutic care for children with specific needs. Community Units provided longer term care. Units generally accommodated up to eight children.

As a Community Unit, Ningana provided longer term accommodation and support for children in State care usually from the age of eight to upper teens. It also assisted young people in their transition to living independently.

Research suggests that the Ningana Community Unit was renamed Brookway Unit in 1984.
