The Visiting Justice's Minute Book, Series ID 1773, relates to the Reformatory School for Boys - Hulk Proserpine, Reformatory School for Boys, Lytton, Diamantina Reformatory School for Boys and Westbrook Reformatory for Boys. It records cases of serious misdemeanour heard before a Visiting Justice (Magistrate) to Westbrook from the Court of Petty Sessions, Toowoomba. Misdemeanours included: indecent behaviour, larceny (theft), adbsconding from "licensed service", and indecent assault.
Access to some of these records is restricted to protect personal privacy.
The following summary details are recorded for each case; date of hearing, name of visiting justice, name of defendant, age, charge, outcome and the justice's signature. In some instances, statements by witnesses (eg. Officials from the reformatory) are also recorded as are doctor's certificates (testifying as to the condition of the boy to undergo punishment).
At the back of the volume are two documents relating to separate incidents. The first is a memo regarding the alibi of the Superintendent on duty (dated 14/4/1913) and the second is a letter containing a statement or testimony addressed to the Superintendent (dated 3/12/1906).
