The Child Safety Department was created in February 2004 when the Families Department (including the Child Protection Branch) was abolished and its functions transferred to two newly-created departments: Communities Department, and Child Safety Department.

On 26 March 2009 the Child Safety Department (Child Protection Services) was abolished and its functions transferred to the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.
