The Children's Services Department was established in 1966 to promote, safeguard and protect the well-being of the children and youth of the state through a comprehensive and coordinated program of child and family welfare. Previously, child and family welfare was the responsibility of the State Children Department, a sub-department of the Labour and Industry Department. The department had responsiblity for juevenile justice facilities. It ceased to exist when the Departments of Family Affairs, Youth, Ethnic Affairs and Children's Services were consolidated into one organisation, the Family and Youth Services Department on 6 June 1987.
