The Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Australia was established in 1874 as one of the arms of the Lutheran Church in Australia. Missionaries from this Synod, together with German missionaries from the Hermannsburg Missionary Society, travelled to the Northern Territory from South Australia and established the Hermannsburg Mission in 1877. In 1944 the part of this Synod that had not broken away to join the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia in 1926, became known as Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia.
