This archival series, Applications and adoption files for state wards [Dependent Children and Adoptions Branch, Department of Community Services], relates to adoptions of State Wards through the New South Wales state government. The records in this series are dated between 1940 and 1961 and are mostly created by the New South Wales state government Child Welfare Department. These files contain correspondence and reports relating to applications for the adoption and boarding out of State wards, typically between the Department and private individuals (e.g. prospective adoptive parents).
Access to this series is restricted due to the personal nature of their contents. People wishing to access the records in this series will need to contact the Adoption Information Unit. The Adoption Information Unit (AIU) is part of the New South Wales state government department of Family and Community Services and provides adoption information and support for individuals and their families in relation to adoptions in New South Wales and Intercountry adoptions that involve New South Wales.
