On 25 November 2010 the Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery, moved:
That this House notes the appreciation of the mother of the member for Wallsend, and all the forgotten children in Wallsend, the Hunter and New South Wales, for the Federal Government's recognition of them and its apology to "the Forgotten Australians".
Ms Hornery then provided an account of her mother's childhood in Monte Pio Orphanage, with the Sisters of Mercy, which she had studied for her history honours thesis. She spoke about the meaning of the Federal Government apology to Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants.
The Minister for Community Services and Member for Goulburn, Ms Pru Goward, responded and spoke about the apology and noted that both Houses of the NSW Parliament had also apologised. She spoke of Waminda at Goulburn and her work with Parragirls.
Alan Ashton, Member for East Hills and Darryl Maguire (Wagga Wagga) spoke in support. Matthew Morris, Member for Charlestown also supported the motion and mentioned the Senate Committee into Institutional Care and the work of Care Leavers Australia Network and the Alliance for Forgotten Australians.
