Education and employment hostels, such as Medina, were operated by or in association with the Native Welfare Department mostly from the mid to late 1960s and early 1970s but came under the administration of the Community Welfare Department from 1972.
It is uncertain from government reports (Signposts 2004, pp.329-330) exactly when the Medina Education and Employment Hostel opened but it was possibly during the 1971-1972 year. It continued to provide accommodation for Aboriginal students in a hostel that was located in a suburban house.
The Medina Education and Employment Hostel closed in May 1983 and the premises were used as a community support hostel.
