In 1940, 25 children left Britain to live in Tasmania for the duration of the war. Under the auspices of the Social Services and Children of the State Department, an Overseas Children's Reception Committee found homes for the children and monitored their care. By 1944, eight children were employed and one had joined the Australian Imperial Forces. The rest remained at school.
