The Church of England Social Welfare Bureau was established in 1947. It was run by a Secretary who was also the Church's first social worker. The Bureau provided advice, support, and assistance to the people in need. The Bureau was closely involved with the placement of children into institutions run by the Church and into foster care. It also acted as a referral service to other agencies. The Church of England Social Welfare Bureau changed its name to the Anglican Social Welfare Bureau in 1981 when the Church itself changed its name.
The Anglican Archives holds general records relating to the work of the Church of England Social Welfare Bureau. These include card indexes, case registers and day books which record information about all people assisted by the Bureau. Most children admitted to Anglican homes have an index card, or register entry, recording details of their situation.
