The Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Department was establlished in March 2012. It holds records relating to institutions operated by the State. The government department was formerly known as the Communities Department. Child Safety Services is part of the Department, it is the Queensland Government agency for child protection and adoption services.on 12 December 2017, the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services split into the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors and the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women.

Under Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 1) 2012, the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services was established on 3 April 2012, following the dissolution of the Department of Communities.
