  • Babies' Home – Babies’ Home (or infant asylum or foundling home) refers to institutions for children under the age of three.
  • Baby Farming – Baby farming was the practice of placing infants in private homes to be nursed and boarded, for a fee.
  • Benevolent Asylum – Benevolent Asylums were nineteenth century institutions that housed “destitute” men, women and children.
  • Board of Management – The Board of Management was a group of appointed or elected persons responsible for overseeing the administration of a non-government children’s institution.
  • Boarding Out – Boarding out was the term used to describe the placement of children and young people in foster care in private homes.
  • Borstal – Borstal was another name for a reformatory for young offenders.
