WB Recieving Home – Alice Springs – Bradshaw House is a National Archives file relating to the Receiving Home for children in Alice Springs which became known as Bradshaw House in 1966. The acronym WB refers to Welfare Branch.
Open.
This file contains letters, telegrams, reports, drawings and plans related to the Receiving Home building at 3 Warburton Street, Alice Springs. Much of the correspondence concerns improvements required for the Home to operate effectively as an institution. The file includes complaints about the conditions of the Home made by one of the Home’s superintendents and the departmental response to these concerns. Some names of staff and children resident in the Home are included in correspondence but with very little personal detail.
The file also contains letters about the government’s attempts to find an alternative building for the receiving home and descriptions of the premises considered. It also contains letters and drawings showing the government’s acquisition of the block at Kempe Street on which Giles House was built and early ideas about the construction of a Receiving and Remand Home on that block.
