The Outlook, at Boonah, was a government-run residential facility for high needs children. It opened on 28 June 1976 and ceased to operate in July 1979.
The Outlook was designed to accommodate high needs children from across Queensland. The facility consisted of a special school, residential accommodation and a mental health service.
The residents placed at The Outlook usually had long histories of unsatisfactory placement in foster care.
The Outlook closed in 1979 due to an inability to control the behaviour of the residents, which resulted in high costs of repairs to damaged facilities.
According to Missing Pieces (2001), following the closure of The Outlook in 1979 it began to operate as a community resource centre.
In a phone discussion in 2014, Find & Connect was informed that after The Outlook closed in 1979, the empty buildings were used for Care and Control programs run by a child care officer from the Department of Children’s Services. This then led to the establishment of The Outlook Training and Resource Centre.
In 2018, the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF) operates on the site.
