Sydney City Mission photographs and a drawing, ca. 1892-1986

The archival collection Sydney City Mission photographs and a drawing includes 130 photographs, a water colour drawing, 65 lantern slides and 13 slides that depict Sydney City Mission activities, including children’s homes. These drawings, photographs and pictures are held by the State Library of New South Wales.

Access Conditions

People wishing to access these records should contact the State Library of New South Wales. Individuals may be required to provide identification or contact Mission Australia to protect the privacy of individuals who may be mentioned in the records. Mission Australia’s policy is to give individuals access to information about them upon request so they can review and correct details. If access is denied then Mission Australia will justify their stance. As a first point of contact however all enquiries should be directed to the State Library of New South Wales.

Records

This archival collection is divided into four archival series, or parts. Each archival series has been given a call number (a code used by librarians to identify records and items). The four archival series are described in more detail below.
PXA 1606/Boxes 1-2: Contains photographs of ‘clients’, staff, programs and locations related to Sydney City Mission including:

• Glebe City Mission Cricket Club, City Refuge Gymnastics team, the Wilderness Program, Missionbeat vans, Benjamin Short Soup kitchen, and life skills classes;
• Seaside House Cronulla, Mission House at Newtown, Swanton Lodge, Clifton Lodge at North Sydney, Balmain Mission Hall, Mt Gibraltar Home at Bowral, Benjamin Short children’s home;
• Green Valley Community Centre, Stanmore Clothing Centre, “The Factory” at Waterloo, Sydney Mission Head Office in Bathurst Street and Benjamin Short (the founder of the Mission); and
• Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Duich, Scotland; Glencoe Mountains from Callart, Scotland.
