STAY Geraldton began in 1984. STAY means ‘short term accommodation for youth’ and it has provided services for young people aged 13-25 years since that time. STAY is run by a private management committee as a 24-hour service.
STAY Geraldton began in 1984 and by 1987 it received funding from the Youth Supported Accommodation Program, which was a sub-program of the Commonwealth/State funded Supported Accommodation Assistance Programme (SAAP). It is run by a private committee of management. In 1989 it was described as occupying two neighbouring houses and providing crisis and medium-term accommodation for males and females 13-25 years, with 24 hour access and a rostered staff. In 1995 it was described as providing short and medium term accommodation to up to 12 young people aged 15-25 (with priority given to 15-18 year olds) who were in crisis. In 2001 it was described as providing a supported crisis and transition accommodation service for young people in the Geraldton community who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. At that time, up to eight young people could be accommodated in the main premises in Quarry Street, and up to another ten young people could be accommodated in supported housing elsewhere in Geraldton.
