St Michael's Children's Home

Details

St Michael’s Children’s Home, run by the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta Congregation, was established around 1960. It was previously known as St Michael’s Orphanage or Boys’ Home. The Children’s Home cared for boys and girls aged 5 to 15 years. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the home evolved into three cottages each with house parents. In 1982 St Michael’s Children’s Home became St Michael’s Family Centre.

According to Trimmer, the building was demolished in January 1972, after which time the Sisters of Mercy continued to provide “family day care, long day care and half-way houses for families in crisis in the buildings opposite The Hills Private Hospital that had been built on the old orphanage site” (Trimmer, 1989).

Presumably after the demolition of the former orphanage, St Michael’s Children’s Home relocated across the road, to the site that became known as St Michael’s Family Centre in 1982.
