St Gerard’s was run by the Sisters of St Joseph at St Anthony’s Croydon. It had formerly been St Anne’s Nursery. St Gerard’s was for married women and babies who needed care, treatment and recuperation after birth, and for single mothers and their babies, including those awaiting adoption. It was closed in 1980 and converted to a home for children in crisis.
St Gerard’s was a Third Schedule Hospital under the Public Hospitals Act 1929. Third Schedule Hospitals were regarded as corporate entities, governed by a hospital board appointed by the Minister for Health. Each board had the capacity to make by laws, employ staff and manage its own affairs.
