The SA Committee for Crippled Children was formed in 1932 to raise funds for the assistance of families with children affected by ‘infantile paralysis’ or poliomyelitis (polio). After receiving part of a the 50,000 pound national ‘gift’ to crippled children from Lord Nuffield in 1935, several sub-committees were formed. These included the Preventative, Curative, Vocational, Transport, Financial and Publicity Committees. In 1938, having purchased the historic home, ‘Alvington’ at Somerton for use as a Crippled Children’s Home the Committee was expanded with members from a large number of charitable organisations. In 1939 the Committee became incorporated and changed its name to the Crippled Children’s Association of SA Inc.
