The Sisters of Mercy, Goulburn Congregation, a Catholic religious order of women from Ireland, was established in 1859. In 1907 the Sisters of Mercy started to consolidate the number of congregations across Australia and amalgamated Goulburn with the congregations in Albury (1868) and Yass (1875). The Sisters were responsible for the administration of several children’s homes owned by the Catholic Diocese of Goulburn including St Joseph’s Orphanage, 1864-1975 and St John’s Home, Goulburn, 1905-1975 which amalgamated into St John’s Home, Auburn Street in 1975. In 2011, the Sisters of Mercy, Goulburn Congregation was dissolved and merged with 15 former Australian congregations to become the Institute of Sisters of Mercy Australia and Papua New Guinea.
