The Sisters of Mercy, Bathurst Congregation, a Catholic religious order of women from Ireland, was established in 1867. The Sisters were responsible for the administration of two children’s homes owned by the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst: St Joseph’s Orphanage, Bathurst which operated from 1867 to 1975; and Croagh Patrick Orphanage, Orange which they were responsible for from 1969 to 1982. From 1981 this congregation was part of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia but maintained its autonomy. In 2011, the Sisters of Mercy, Bathurst Congregation was dissolved and merged with 15 former Australian congregations to become the Institute of Sisters of Mercy Australia and Papua New Guinea.
