In December 2018, the UK government announced they were establishing a payment scheme for former British Child Migrants. The scheme was for people who had been separated from their families and sent overseas as part of the UK government’s participation in child migration programs.
The payment scheme was established in response to the Interim Report of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and in particular, its report into Child Migration Programmes.
The UK government stated that the payments were being made to recognise the “harm done to eligible former British child migrants in being separated from their families and sent overseas”.
All eligible former British Child Migrants could receive a payment of 20,000 GPB, regardless of if they suffered abuse or not.
The payment scheme is administered by the Child Migrants Trust. Applications for payment opened on 1 May 2019.
