The Nunawading Youth Residential Centre was established in 1991, on the former site of Winlaton. It accommodated young people from ten and fourteen years who had been sentenced to detention. It also provided youth training centre programs.
According to the Finding Records website, Nunawading Youth Residential Centre was a large complex with different sections, including: Winbirra Remand Centre (1991-92), Warrina Remand Centre (1992-93), Leawarra Girls’ Hostel (1991-92). Some of these names were carried over from the institution formerly on the site, Winlaton.
In around 1992-93, the functions of the Nunawading Youth Residential Centre were consolidated at the former Baltara Reception Centre site and the new facility at Parkville was named the Melbourne Youth Residential Centre. The site at Nunawading was sold.
