Notifications of Reception is an archival series held by the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea Archives, Stanmore. The records relate to St Josephs’ Orphanage, Goulburn. The series is made up of ten volumes containing copies of Notification of Reception forms completed to comply with provisions of the Infant Protection Act, 1904 and the Child Welfare Act, 1923 and 1939.The Notifications of Reception are managed by the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG).

Access Conditions

Application for access must be made, in writing, to the Archivist, providing personal identification documents to establish the right to access information. Physical access to the records is not permitted due to their fragility and the need to protect the confidentiality of information concerning other persons. Information will be forwarded by mail.

Records

Volumes 1-3 in this Series cover the period 1915-1945. They contain handwritten copies of Notification of Reception forms. The information in the registers includes: name of place; address; date of reception; name of infant in full; register folio number; name and address of mother; birthplace of child; religion of child; date of birth; date of registration of birth; if placed with any person to nurse before this notification, name and address of such person; why admitted; condition of mother; if able to support; amount (if any) being paid for the maintenance of the child in an institution. Note that there are no entries in these registers for 1929.

Volumes 4-10 (1945-1959) contain carbon copies of Returns of Particulars to be Registered Pursuant to section 34 of the Child Welfare Act 1939, regulation 42 (Child Welfare Department Form 14). The information in the registers includes: full name of child; date and place of birth; religion of child; name, marital status, address and occupation of parents; name and address of person from whom child was received into the home; date child was received; particulars of arrangements made by parent for clothing and medical attendance; and amount of monies paid and by whom.
