The Northern Region Group Home was the new name given to Spence Cottage at 403 The Parade, Kensington Gardens in 1980. Run by the Department for Community Welfare, the Home provided longer term accommodation for State children in their upper teens.

After the passing of the 1972 Community Welfare Act, the welfare department was restructured and the management of residential care was decentralised. The metropolitan area was divided into regions and each region was provided with a similar group of facilities for smaller group care. In keeping with a new focus on assessment of children after they were admitted into care and developing individual programs for children, each region had an Admission Unit, a Community Unit and a Group Home. Group Homes usually accommodated older children for longer periods of time.

The closing date for the Northern Region Group Home is not known.
