The Mental Hospital Act 1885 has the full title ”An Act to amend the Mental Hospitals Act 1858′ (Act no. 49 Vic. No.35). It replaces the Commissioners who were responsible for regularly reviewing the institution’s administration, maintenance and treatment of people admitted to the hospital with Official Visitors. The number of Official Visitors per hospital was lower than the number of commissioners required before this amendment. Official Visitors could also be appointed to 2 or more hospitals, but could only perform their role for 1 year. Official Visitors could be re-appointed. The Official Visitors were required to have no direct or indirect personal interest in the Mental Hospital or the individuals admitted there This act was repealed by The Mental Health Act 1963 (Act No.63 of 1963) on 3 December 1963.
