The Maintenance by Relatives of Indigent Persons in Public charitable Institutions 1862 also known by its full title “An Act to provide for the Maintenance by their Relatives of indigent Persons in Public charitable Institutions”(Act no.26 Vict. No.3) details who is responsible for financially supporting people in public and charitable institutions. This included Asylums and Hospitals. Depending of the financial situation, a person deemed financially responsible to some-one living in an institution was required to pay all or some of the costs. This legislation was repealed by Public Charities Act 1873 (Act no.37 Vict. No.15) on 1 December 1873.
