The Lucinda Resource Centre, opened in 1980 on the site of the former Weeroona Girls’ Training Centre in Latrobe. It provided services and activities to ‘high need’ children and families to prevent the children from becoming state wards. In 1986, the Centre became the North-West Regional Resource Unit.
The establishment of the Lucinda Resource Centre reflected the Social Welfare Department’s commitment to, as far as possible, replace institutional care for children with preventative measures. One senior officer, two child welfare officers, and a utility officer staffed it.
The Centre ran group programs that aimed to improve self-esteem and social skills so that the families and children could integrate more successfully with their communities.
