The Loxton Hostel was established by the Mentally Retarded Children’s Association in 1977 in Loxton. The Hostel provided single rooms for more than 20 people. The majority of residents came from the Riverland area and lived at the Hostel in order to attend the Loxton Workshop which had been established in 1974. The Loxton Hostel moved to new purpose built accommodation in 2012 and from that time catered for adults with intellectual disabilities.
The Loxton Hostel was established by the Mentally Retarded Children’s Association in 1977 on Bookpurnong Road in Loxton. The Hostel took over premises that were formerly the Loxton Riverview Motel. The Hostel provided single rooms with ensuite bathroom facilities for more than 20 people. The majority of residents came from the Riverland area and lived at the Hostel in order to attend the Loxton Workshop which had been established in 1974. The Loxton Hostel was also called Orana, a Wiradjuri word meaning ‘welcome’.
In 1980 the Mentally Retarded Children’s Association took on the name Orana as the name of the organisation.
The Loxton Hostel moved to new purpose built accommodation in 2012 and from that time catered for adults with intellectual disabilities.
