These records are held by King Edward Memorial Hospital (1916 - current).
The King Edward Memorial Hospital holds records of its activities from 1916 onwards. The type and quantity of records varies depending on the year and records available.
An Access to Health Information & Freedom of Information form must be completed to request records. If requesting on behalf of someone else, written authorisation must be provided. If you are requesting personal information about yourself, there are no fees and charges.
Birth Registry Books (containing basic information such as date of birth, sex of baby, and who delivered) are available for the full time the hospital has been open.
KEMH was a site where forced adoptions occurred. In these cases, the records of the child were transferred to Child Protective Services or other agencies involved in the adoption and not retained by KEMH. This means that records held by KEMH are generally about birth mothers, rather than the children.
It is thought that some records have been destroyed, in line with the records retention policies at the time. Since the 1970s, all records have been retained.
