Havenview Children's Home

Details

Havenview Children’s Home, run by the Christian Brethren under the auspices of Glenhaven Children’s Home, opened in about 1970. It was in Devonport. The Home provided cottage accommodation for around three children. It closed around 1989.

A married couple belonging to the Christian Brethren with three children of their own, one adopted, ran Heavenview Children’s Home. The woman managed the household while the man went out to work. It is likely that most of the running expenses came out of his earnings while the Christian Brethren donated goods or funds and made their skills available.

The Home moved into a newly built house in East Devonport in November 1971. The funds for it came from a potato packing project at Glenhaven Children’s Home.

Havenview was not an approved children’s home under Section 10 of the Child Welfare Act 1960. Instead its Departmental approval came through Glenview Children’s Home which had the overall management of it.

The couple who started Heavenview retired in 1984 because all the children had grown up. Articles in Assembly Challenge, the newsletter of the Christian Brethren, suggest that the Home may have kept going, possibly closing in 1989.
