Bethany Boys’ Home

  • HSD6/1/5551 60/BB General Bethany Boys Home-Miscellaneous [Dated 1957] This item was created by the Hospital and Medical Services Division, which was located in the Public Health Department. It contains a letter with some information about the purpose of Bethany Boys’ Home, its policy, and showing that it was run by the Churches of Christ in Tasmania.

Clarendon Children’s Home

  • HSD6/1/2384 60/104 Miscellaneous-Clarendon Children’s-Home [Dated 1949] This item contains a request from the Board of the Home to the Director of Public Health for a nutritionist to assess the children’s diet. The file also contains the nutritionist’s report. It provides an insight into some of the routines of the Home as well as giving a detailed account of the food that the children ate.

It contains historical information about St Giles’ Home, mostly in the form of newspaper clippings and correspondence.

St John’s Park/ Wingfield/ After Care School

  • HSD6/1/539 98/17 St Johns Park-Report-second annual Wingfield Outings Club. [Dated 1946] This item contains details about day trips that the club gave to children at Wingfield House in 1946.
  • HSD6/1/542 98/21 St Johns Park-Wingfield House-correspondence-childrens diets. [Dated 1946] This item consists of a letter from the Director of Hospitals and Medical Services to the Matron of Wingfield written on 18 June 1946. The Director had received a complaint about the children’s evening meals which too often consisted of saveloys. He recommended a wider choice of food and made some suggestions.

Multiple Homes

  • HSD6/1/6026: 110-Proposed Home for Mental Defectives-Hobart (continued on 98/4/14) [Dated 1949-1953] This item contains correspondence of the Public Health Department about a proposal to build a home for children with intellectual disabilities. The Mental Defectives Home at St John’s Park was no longer a suitable place for children as the site was now mostly for elderly people. The file also contains minimal information about Ashley Home for Boys, Lachlan Park, the Magdalen Home, and Wybra Hall.
