From the mid 1950s St John’s Homes for Boys and Girls, and later Anglicare Victoria, ran a number of family group homes across Melbourne. In around 1955, St John’s opened its first four family group homes, or cottage homes, on the main St John’s site in Canterbury. Initially St John’s housed only boys, however the move away from the institutionalised system to family group homes allowed girls to also be accommodated, leading to the Home changing its name in 1958 to St John’s Homes for Boys and Girls. Over the following decades St John’s Homes opened many family group homes, hostels, and residential units across Melbourne’s outer suburbs. The exact opening and closing dates of many of these homes are not yet known.
