Department of Health & Human Services, State Government of Victoria

Details

On 1 January 2015, the Victorian Government established the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) to integrate health and human services policies, programs and services. The new DHHS brings together the former Department of Health, former Department of Human Services and Sport and Recreation Victoria. DHHS is responsible for dealing with children placed in the care of the state. This child welfare ‘function’ has been the responsibility of many different government agencies in Victoria since 1864, and most of the records related to the State’s child welfare responsibilities are managed by DHHS and Public Record Office Victoria (PROV). In November 2020, the Victorian government announced that DHHS would be separated into two new departments in February 2021: the Department of Health and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
