The De Facto Relationships Act 1996 [renamed Domestic Partners Property Act 1996 by Act No.43/2006] (Act No.51/1996) was passed on 1 August 1996 and commenced 16 December 1996. The full title is ‘An Act to facilitate the resolution of property disputes arising on the termination of de facto relationships; and for other purposes’. The Act introduces the concept of a cohabitation agreement, which makes provision for the division of property and other financial matters upon the termination of a de facto relationship. It also provides a definition and relevance of a “child” of de facto partners in a judicial sense. For a full list of amendments, see the endnotes of the current version.
