Details

Croagh Patrick Orphanage Records is a collection of records held by the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea Archives & Heritage Centre. The records date from 1929 to 1981 and relate to Croagh Patrick Home and Croagh Patrick Orphanage. The collection is made up of seven series including; Admission and Discharge Registers, Record Books and Cards, Registers and Record Books.

Access to records is restricted to protect the privacy of individuals, but you are very welcome to enquire. The Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea encourages you to either contact them directly for access to personal records, or use one of the available Support Services.

Records

More specifically, the collection includes:

  • Record books, 1929-1948, 1 Volume
    Contains handwritten entries in alphabetical index format of children admitted to the Orphanage during that period. Information given is mostly only name and year of admission.
  • Registers, 1953-1970, 1 Volume
    Contains a handwritten set of alphabetically listed pages at the front of the book and entries in an official typed Register format. The information includes Name, Date of Birth, Religion, Parents’ details, Persons involved in handing child over, Date of Reception, Date of Discharge, ongoing maintenance details for the child.
  • Admission Books, 1929-1968, 3 Volumes
    The first two volumes contain handwritten entries giving details of children admitted to the orphanage from 1929 to 1960. Volume 1 contains Date of Admission, Name, Date and Place of Birth, Parental details, By whom recommended, Date of Discharge. Volume 2 contains Name, Date of Birth, Date of Admission and Date of Discharge. Volume 3 covers 1961 to 1968 and contains handwritten completion of Catholic Welfare Bureau Admission Forms, including Particulars of Parents, Particulars of Children, Medical information, and a Declaration signed by Parent or Guardian regarding Child Endowment.
  • Personal Record Cards, 1966-1981, One box
    Contains one box of double-sided printed Record cards filled out by hand. The information includes Name, Date and Place of Birth, Religion, Parents’ details, Date and circumstances of Admission, Maintenance details, Discharge details, Medical information and Immunisation Record.
  • Notices of Reception, Discharge, Death or Admission to Hospital, 1970-1981, 1 Volume
    Contains handwritten completion of Forms to comply with the Child Welfare Act, (Regulations 47A (w) and 47B (g)–Forms 20H, 20I, 20J). The information includes: Details of Child, Reception, Discharge, Death, Admission to Hospital, not all signed and dated.
  • Notifications of Discharges, 1960-1963, 1 Volume
    Contains handwritten completion of Forms to comply with the provisions of the Child Welfare Act, 1939, (Regulation 43), and records details for children aged under seven years at time of Discharge.
  • Notification of Reception Books, 1959-1970, 2 Volumes
    Contains handwritten completion of Forms to comply with the provisions of the Child Welfare Act 1939 (Regulation 42).The information includes: Date of Reception of child, Child’s full name, Child’s Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Child’s religion; Name, marital status, address and occupation of Mother, Father’s address and occupation, Name of Person from whom child was received, their address, and the Date when child was Received, Particulars of arrangements made by the parent for child’s maintenance; signature of Custodian.
